History of Cedar Hill Cemetery
Founded in 1866, Cedar Hill Cemetery is one of the oldest continuously operated cemeteries in the state of Maryland. The cemetery was founded on 100 acres of land that had previously been part of the John Eager Howard estate. The first person interred at Cedar Hill Cemetery was William H. Phipps, who died on June 8, 1866.

Notable Interments at Cedar Hill Cemetery
Cedar Hill Cemetery is the final resting place for many famous Marylanders, including Johns Hopkins (1813-1873), Babe Ruth (1895-1948), and Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). Hopkins, who was the founder of Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital, is buried in a mausoleum near the center of the cemetery. Ruth, who was born in Baltimore and began his Major League Baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles, is buried in an unmarked grave near the back of the cemetery. Poe, who was one of the most important American writers of the 19th century, is buried in a family plot near the front entrance of the cemetery.
